November 2009: Small Spaces!
The Learning Curve’s 2009 November Activities will be running throughout the month.

Events!
Celebrate World Origami Day – Saturday, November 7th from 10am – 4pm in the Atrium
Children of all-ages are invited to drop in and try their hand at this ancient paper craft with help from members of the Indianapolis Regional Origami Network (IRON) of Folders.
Family Fall Fest: Lecture & Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge IV – Saturday, November 7th from 1pm – 5pm in the Auditorium
An afternoon of cultural entertainment for the entire family is in store during this annual event presented by IMCPL’s African-American History Committee. Teens are invited to participate in the Slammin’ Rhymes Poetry Challenge (entry forms available at www.imcpl.org). Individuals of all-ages will enjoy a variety of song, dance, and poetry. Special performances will be presented by the Mt. Olive Choir, Indy Steppers, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Fighting Words, and the Barry Dixon Reflections of Worship Choir.
Day of the Dead: Frida Shrines – Saturday, November 7th @ 2pm in the Goodrich-Houk Room
Teens are invited to celebrate Day of the Dead, which uses ancient rituals from Mexico and Central America to honor the dead and the continuity of life, by creating mini-shrines to commemorate the life of artist Frida Kahlo by decorating empty matchboxes with paper, flowers, pictures, and glitter. This program is presented by the Indianapolis Art Center. Registration is required: 275-4222
Music for Little Folks – Saturday, November 14th @ 11am in the Theater
Join Miss Bobbie for a wiggly, jiggly, giggly good time for children 2-7 years old and their caregivers. Registration is required: 275-4222
Bilingual Storytime: American Sign Language – Saturday, November 14th @ 2pm in the Theater New Activities!
Families are invited to join an interactive bilingual storytime celebrating the languages and cultures of the world. November’s featured language is American Sign Language.

Bouncing off the Walls – Tech Lab / Mon. @ 2pm, Fri. @ 11:30am, Sat. @ 1pm
Learn to program Lego Mindstorm Robots so they can find their way out of a box. Ages 6-18.
Draw the Line – Arena / Mon. & Fri. @ 1pm, Thurs. @ 3pm
Where do you draw the line? We'll use ImageBlender software and take away parts of a picture to find the essence of an image. Ages 6-18.
Small Stages – Group Coves / Mon. & Sat. @ 11:30am, Weds. @ 3pm
Design a set on a small stage and make it appear life-sized on the laptops as your group uses miniature props, digital microscopes, and webcams. All-ages.
Tilt the World – Vortex / Mon. & Tues. @ 3pm, Fri. @ 2pm
Calling all photographers! Use a digital camera and special effects to miniaturize your photos and shrink the Library! Ages 8-18.

Open Lab – Arena / Mon. – Thurs. @ 4:00 - 6:00p.m. The return of Homeschool Day!
Compose a song, design an animation, test emerging technology, experience robotics, join CurveWorld, or draw a picture! This is your time to create using new hardware or design software on Learning Curve laptops.
Mondays and Fridays have activities concentrated during the daytime for our homeschool audience!

Events!
Bilingual Storytime: Spanish – Saturday, October 10th @ 2pm Individuals of all ages are invited for a dance performance in the Atrium by Ensamble Folklórico at 2pm and attend the World of Families Bilingual Storytime at 2:30 p.m. in The Learning Curve Theater. The first 100 children to attend the storytime will receive a free book. Books are provided by Fifth Third Bank, Indiana. Creepy Crawly Critters – Sunday, October 25th @ 2pm in the Learning Curve Theater Families and children of all ages are invited to learn about tarantulas, scorpions, and more, and meet them up close during this program presented by Snakehead Ed.
Terrorpalooza I – Thursday, October 29th @ 7pm in the Auditorium The Learning Curve, Herron High School, and Young Actors’ Theatre present a fright-filled film premier and performance event.

Color Cover Up – Arena / Mon. & Fri. @ 1pm, Thurs. @ 3pm In the dark, do your eyes play tricks on you? Use a Digital Pen Tablet and your Photoshop powers to reveal what’s hidden in the dark. (Ages 6-18)
Light Painting – Think Tank / Mon., Weds., & Fri. @ 3pm Lights. Camera. Action! Illuminate the darkness with dancing lights and digital and digital cameras to create a ‘light painting’.
Night Noises – Tech Lab / Mon., Fri., & Sat. @ 11:30am Travel with us in Google Earth on the laptop computers. Can you guess where you are by the sounds in the night? (All-ages)
Robot Maze – Tech Lab / Mon. & Fri. @ 2pm, Sat. @ 1pm Use your programming skills to navigate LEGO Mindstorm NXT Robots from one end of the shifting maze to the other.
